A mason stain is essentially an oxide or series of oxides and opacifiers which have been blended together, calcined, then ground to a 200 mesh or so powder. Stains may be mixed to achieve additional colors. It can also be mixed with a variety of mediums to turn them into china paints, enamels, underglazes, decals, etc. etc.
